Why provinces?

This map is a blatant copy of Europa Universalis IV. Even the colors (arbitrary as they may be in EU4) are copied over. I honestly hope that this project, which clearly has huge potential, gives up on the stolen EU4 style provinces. I'm very passionate about history, and this project clearly shows promise.

Hi and thank you for your question. Actually in the first draft of this project, countries had to be hand drawn on the map via polygons (Openstreetmap style), the underlying framework actually supports this. However, there is a reason why Openstreetmap only allows this in its lowest zoom levels. Hand drawn areas for every independent realm would quickly go out of hand and would not be possible to smoothly visualize in a browser.

The second argument against it is that in 500+ year ago history, most maps were just approximations which is why in 95% of cases the province approach is as accurate as hand drawn polygons would be.

And lastly having to draw every little new extension of an empire simply exceeds the scope of this project and would make the data, which have to be hand drawn and quality controlled, too heavy.

The EU4 data (or more specifically: the EU 4: Extended-timeline Mod data - reference to http://chronas.org/credits/content), as mentioned in many places, is just a starting point and when the project reaches its final release will be modifiable and changeable. If you are interested in doing moderator work of the data, you can tick that checkbox in your profile.

@Luveha _ Yes! There are so many mistakes still in the dataset which needs to get cleaned up. I am currently writing the code which will make data edits possible for privileged accounts. If you are interested in helping, go to http://chronas.org/me and check the "Generally interested in moderating" and "Moderate history data" checkboxes in the Moderation section.

I will inform the potential moderators when the code is ready.

Hi Jose! I saw you checked the moderator box. I hope to get finished with the basic province editing this holiday season. Please stay tuned.
